Art and Design at J H Godwin

The intent:

The Art and Design curriculum at J H Godwin aims to inspire children to develop their creativity, using a wide range of media and materials. Our Art curriculum sets challenges, engages and inspires children and equips them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We aim to enable our pupils to create work with a real purpose, and be able to comment on their own work and the work of others to evaluate and analyse art work. By allowing children to explore various skills including drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles and 3D work, and introducing them to famous artists, our children will be able to reach, or even exceed their potential in art and design at J H Godwin, and be able to see the progress they have made by showcasing the skills and progress they have made across each year.

By the end of EYFS children will be able to use the correct tripod grip to be able to create a variety of marks using different drawing tools. They will be able to confidently experiment with a range of media in art, using colour, design, texture and form.

By the end of KS1 children will be able to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop works of art, and to develop and have opportunities to use techniques in colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. Children will be able to draw with a range of tone and marks, mix colours and tones, create collages, create a 3D piece of art, and be able to use printing and pattern in their artwork where appropriate. They will also be taught about a range of artists and designers, and be able to make links to their own work. Children will be able to evaluate their own work through peer and self-assessment.

By the end of KS2 children will be able to develop their techniques and control of materials in order to create a variety of art and design pieces, for example; drawing, painting and sculpture, using different media. Children will be able to draw with appropriate proportion and perspective, create texture, such as, weavings, batik or layering, create a 3D sculpture, and to be able to use pattern and printing for a purpose, (for examples, using tessellation, ICT, designing wallpaper etc).They will also be taught about a range of artists, architects and designers in history, and be able to make links to their own work. Children will be able to evaluate their own work through peer and self-assessment.

The implementation:

The skills and knowledge that children will develop throughout each art unit are mapped across each year group as On Track Indicators (OTIs) and throughout the school to ensure progression. At J H Godwin, we follow Word Aware strategies to embed new subject specific vocabulary that children can use to support their understanding and ability to evaluate and analyse art work effectively. A similar focus on skills means that children are given opportunities to express their creative imagination, as well as practice and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture.

Each year group should aim to plan 3 units of art and design during the year, and teaching and learning should show a build-up of skills, leading up to a final piece that can be showcased in school.
