Handwriting

Once children have secured their basic printing letter formation using the Read Write Inc. strategies, they then progress to developing a cursive script mid-Year 1. In all lessons, including phonics, teaching staff model letter formation/ handwriting.

We use PenPals progressive handwriting scheme to teach cursive handwriting skills weekly. There are 10 handwriting foci/objectives per term with explicit modelling by teachers.

Each session is made up of:

  • a warm up pattern to copy
  • letters/strings to practise
  • words to practise
  • where appropriate, a short passage to copy
  • an assessment/check prompt for self/peer assessment

We use Debbie Hepplewhite ‘patter’ when modelling and speaking about cursive handwriting. We use English books with handwriting lines to reinforce these expectations.
