Homework

Homework Policy

Aims

The aim of homework is:

  • to be a purposeful activity intended to reinforce and support the work undertaken in school
  • to enable skills to be practised
  • to train children to become independent learners
  • to share children’s learning with parents
  • Homework is also seen as a vital communication link between the classroom and parents.

Organisation

Any homework set should be written in the child’s homework book with the date to be returned clearly stated.

Children are responsible for the care of this book and ensuring that it is handed in on time. Teachers should go through the homework verbally with the children before it is sent home. Homework should be challenging but achievable for each child. In Key Stage 1 this should take them about 15 – 20 minutes and in Key stage 2 over half an hour.

Children are expected to complete all homework set, to the best of their ability within the time allocations. Homework should be given out no later than Friday and returned by the following Tuesday.

If a child does not complete their homework on time, they should be given the opportunity to complete it using school resources during a playtime.

Types of Homework

Each week the children should be given maths, English or a mixture of both (this cold include spellings and times tables). They may at times be given topic work. Alongside this homework children should also be reading at least three times a week.  Children may also be given opportunities to complete online homework on sites such as Education city, this should not replace their written homework.

Equal Opportunities

All children are expected to complete their homework and return it to school by the completion date. Tasks should be set to their age and ability. A homework club is available in school for all children to attend.
