Rights Respecting

Here at J.H. Godwin we are committed to becoming a Rights Respecting School. The Rights Respecting School award is run by UNICEF and is awarded to schools who can display that the rights of children (as governed by the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child) are respected and understood by all agencies involved in the school, from children to govenors.

"A Rights Respecting School is a place where we can all feel confident with ourselves and it encourages us to use our voice. It has helped me build my confidence. It has helped me raise awareness of injustice in the world."
(A pupil from a Rights Respecting primary school)

Here at J.H. Godwin we are working towards becoming a Rights Respecting School, and below are just some examples of what we are doing to achieve this goal:

  • We have established a children's steering group whose responsibility it is to guide, monitor and help the school move towards becoming a more rights respecting school.
  • As a school, we focus on one article from the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child every half term and each class learns about this right and how it effects children in both our country and around the world.
  • We have established "What's in the News" class books in each classroom to relate current events around the world to rights around the world.
  • We are active participants in the RRSA Shoeshare scheme whereby as a school we donate old and unwanted shoes to those less fortunate than ourselves.
  • In our school we are working hard to ensure that our environment reflects the work we are doing in regards to children's rights, thus each classroom in the school has on display a copy of the UN Convention of the Rights of a Child. Our hall also has a large display created by the children that displays six of the Articles.

In December 2017, we were awarded the "recognition of commitment" by UNICEF for the hardwork and dedication that we have shown as a school towards becoming a Rights Respecting School.

We hope by July 2018 to have achieved the Silver Award.
